Department of Pharmacy, Central University of Rajasthan

The Department of Pharmacy at the Central University of Rajasthan (CURaj), was established in year 2012 with the aim to excel in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, stands as a beacon of excellence in pharmaceutical education and research, proudly holding the 27th-29th ranking consistently in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for last three years- NIRF ranking 27 in 2023, NIRF ranking 29 in 2024, NIRF ranking 27 in 2025. The programs run by the department are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The department offers a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) syllabus with Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) programs in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmacy. The Department has various ongoing extramural funded projects of more than 1250 lakhs from different agencies of the Government of India such as DST, NRDC, ICMR and DBT, SPARC etc.

 

Research at the Department

Research is a cornerstone of the Department of Pharmacy. The department is a Department of Science and Technology (DST)-FIST recognized department with more than 4 crores of research funding from various funding agencies like DST, Science and Engineering Research Board, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology, University Grants Commission (UGC), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and DST-Rajasthan. The average research funding per faculty member is 178.6 lakhs. The departmental faculty members are holding a total of 04 patents and have published over 375 publications in reputed journals with an average impact factor of 3.48.  The total citations of the department are 7076 with an impressive h-index of 44. The research areas of the department are drug delivery, pharmacokinetics, drug design, computational chemistry, phytochemistry and nanotechnology. Two of the faculty members have bagged international recognition in the form of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Award and American Association of Indian Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAiPS) Award. One faculty member has bagged the coveted national awards like ICMR-Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize 2020 and National Technical Teacher’s Award 2022. At the university level also the awards of Best Teacher and Best Researcher have been bagged by the departmental teachers. Four faculty members of the department are amongst the top 2% cited scientists worldwide (as per the Stanford University published in Mendeley Data, Elsevier), showcasing the quality of research published. Many of the faculty members are on the editorial boards of reputed journals like PLOS One, Frontiers in Pharmacology and Drug Delivery Letters. 

Students and Placements

The department is able to attract quality students from almost all the states and UTs of the country with almost 48% males and 52% females. Majority of the M. Pharm. students are GPAT (Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test) qualified and receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,400/- by the UGC. Majority of the PhD students are also receiving the fellowships from CSIR and ICMR. Two of the PhD scholars have been awarded the reputed Commonwealth Split-site Scholarship. The students/scholars of the department are the backbone of the research and have various national and international awards to their credit. The placement profile of the department is marvelous and M. Pharm. pass-outs are serving various government and multinational organizations with a handsome salary. The PhDs of the department are also well placed. For instance, one of our PhD scholars is serving the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati as Regular Assistant Professor and numerous scholars have been able to grab prestigious post-doctoral fellowships in various foreign research institutes like University of Capetown South Africa, University of Warsaw, Poland, North Dakota State University, University of Texas Heath Science, University of Southern California and University of Connecticut, USA

M. Pharm. in Pharmaceutics

M Pharm in Pharmaceutics

Master of Pharmacy programme at the Department of Pharmacy, Central University of Rajasthan was started after various rounds of meetings with the renowned academicians and researchers in the domain. The programme, since its inception, inculcated the elements of up to date knowledge, appropriate laboratory training and the competitiveness in the pharmaceutical technology field. The students are trained well in the sought after fields of  Pharmaceutical Nano technology, Pharmaceutical formulation development, Quality-by-Design (QbD), Pharmacokinetics, Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Analysis, apart from the routine courses. The Department has well-equipped laboratories for the programme and the admission in the programme is through the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET). Preference is given to the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) qualified candidates. 

M. Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Among the many branches in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry can be regarded as the important basic streams of Pharmacy. However, unlike other basic sciences, these programmes have appeared as interdependent scientific offshoots amalgamating the principles of various scientific domains.  These courses provides pharmacy students with a comprehensive understanding of the modern pharmaceutical analytical techniques, organic chemistry reactions and mechanisms, chemistry of natural products and their importance in lead discovery,  mechanism of drug action at molecular level, the relationship between the structure of drugs and the differences in activity which is referred to as SAR, the relationship between physicochemical properties of drugs and its impact on activity, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET), and latest developments in the field of drug design including 3D QSAR, molecular modeling- molecular docking, molecular dynamics, Pharmacophore mapping and virtual screening.  An understanding of the chemical basis of drug action coupled with understanding of its pharmacokinetics gives pharmacy students the ability to answer rationally the “why” and “how” of drug action and to modulate the activity by fine-tuning various attributes of the drugs.  This knowledge puts the pharmacist in a unique position among the various health care professionals.  By imparting an exclusive knowledge base, the courses offered to play a vital role in providing critical thinking and evidence-based problem-solving skills to pharmacy students, enabling them to make optimal decisions in this area of pharmacy.  Preference is given to the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) qualified candidates.     

M Pharm in Pharmacology

Among the many branches in Pharmacy, Pharmacology can be regarded as the important basic streams of Pharmacy. However, unlike other basic sciences, In the realm of Pharmacy, Pharmacology stands out as a fundamental pillar. Unlike other basic sciences, it intertwines principles from various scientific domains, serving as an indispensable nexus. This program equips pharmacy students with a comprehensive grasp of disease pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy, encompassing adverse effects, contraindications, and clinical applications of medications. It delves into preclinical safety and toxicological assessments of drugs and novel chemical entities, fostering competence in regulatory toxicological evaluation. Structured to fortify foundational pharmacological knowledge and illuminate recent therapeutic advancements, the curriculum elucidates drug mechanisms and their effects. It also instills proficiency in maintaining laboratory animals and understanding in vitro and in vivo preclinical evaluation methodologies. By comprehending the chemical underpinnings of drug action alongside pharmacodynamics, pharmacy students gain the ability to judiciously address the "why" and "how" of drug interactions, thus fine-tuning drug attributes to modulate activity. This specialized knowledge elevates pharmacists to a distinctive role among healthcare professionals. Through exclusive coursework, these programs cultivate critical thinking and evidence-based problem-solving skills, empowering students to make informed decisions within the pharmacy domain.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Department of Pharmacy, Central University of Rajasthan is offering Doctor of Philosophy programme since its inception. After qualifying the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET), M. Pharm. pass out students can opt for the research in the department, based on their research interests and the research profiles of the faculty members of the department.

The Department of Pharmacy is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities that support both teaching and research.
