2. "Legal Translation : Issues and Mechanism with Special Reference to Legal Maxims" by

Yashvi Bhati ,Enrollment No. - 2019IMSLI 021,Department of Linguistics,Central University of Rajasthan, Ajmer

Under the supervision of Dr. Dhananjay Kumar Tiwari

In the intricate tapestry of languages and legal systems, the role of translation emerges as a vital thread, weaving connections across diverse cultures and facilitating global communication. This dissertation embarks on a journey into the profound realm of legal translation, unraveling its historical evolution, exploring theoretical frameworks, and delving into the multifaceted challenges faced by those who navigate the delicate balance between words and the law.
Translation, as an art, transcends linguistic boundaries, fostering connections that go beyond mere words, preserving emotions, and forging cultural ties. Legal translation, with its focus on translating documents like contracts, laws, and court documents, occupies a specialized niche where linguistic precision meets the intricacies of legislative and judicial intent. Legal translators play a pivotal role in bridging linguistic gaps, ensuring clarity, and maintaining legal equivalence between the source and translated documents. The historical background reveals the ancient roots of translation, from the trading interactions of civilizations to the translation of the Old Testament and the pivotal role of Arab scholars during the Middle Ages. The dissertation also explores prominent translation theories, including Catford's linguistic shifts, Jakobson's theory of equivalence, and Nida's dynamic equivalence.
The aims and objectives underscore a comprehensive understanding of legal translation, highlighting linguistic issues and delving into the intricacies of translating legal maxims. The research methodology employs analytical and descriptive methods, using a sample of 100 legal maxims for a comparative semantic analysis. Acknowledging the limitations inherent in the study, which deliberately narrows its focus to legal translation, specifically legal maxims from English to Hindi, the dissertation aspires to be a starting point in the exploration of this vast and nuanced field.
As readers embark on this journey, may this dissertation serve as a guide through the rich landscape of legal translation, fostering a deeper appreciation for the challenges and artistry involved in conveying legal meaning across languages.
