I am an accomplished electrophysiologist and cell biologist with over 12 years of expertise in epithelial and smooth muscle physiology. My dedication to this field drives my research and contributions, and I am committed to advancing our understanding of these vital areas.

I am excited to announce the launch of my lab, "Membrane Transport and Trafficking." Our research will delve into the dynamic fields of electrophysiology and cell biology, and I have 3 to 4 promising projects with strong preliminary data waiting for exploration......

Suppose you are a hardworking student with a background in Physiology, Zoology, Biochemistry, or any Life Sciences, and are eager to embark on a Ph.D. journey to contribute to cellular and preclinical disease models (animal models). In that case, I invite you to reach out for a discussion!

I also warmly welcome students eligible for the DST-Inspire JRF program, particularly those with a compelling project proposal, as well as those from backgrounds in Food and Nutrition.

We are working on developing a new insect model to study cell biology as a substitute for Drosophila...!!!

Research Interests:

  • Membrane transport (Electrophysiology) and trafficking.
  • Ca2+ and cAMP signaling,  at the Membrane Contact Site (MCS)
  • Regulation of Membrane Transport and Tight Junction by Microbiome.
  • Secretory Epithelia and Smooth Muscle-Linked Disorders.
  • Assistant Professor - Department of Biochemistry, Central University of Rajasthan, Ajmer(April 2025 onwards)
  • Visiting Fellow - National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research(NIDCR) / National Institute of Health(NIH), MD, USA (Spt'2019 - April'2025). Study topic - Epithelial Signaling and Transport.
  • Post-doctoral Fellow - Department of Pharmacology, University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine(UNR), NV, USA (Spt'2018 - Aug'2019). Study topic - Smooth muscle E-C coupling.
  • Doctoral Fellow: Pathophysiology Division,  National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED, Kolkata, India). Study topic -Intestinal Ion Transport and Barrier Function.
  • CSIR - UGC NET - JRF, ICMR - JRF, GATE
  • Project Fellow at National Institute of Biomedical Genomics(NIBMG), Kalyani & Presidency University, Kolkata, WB (2013)
  • Guest Lecturer of Biochemistry at UG level Heralal Majumder College for Women & Vidyasagar College, Kolkata (2011-2012).
  • M.Sc. in Biochemistry(Bullygunge Science College, Calcutta University, 2009-2011)
  • B.Sc. in Physiology (Hons) (City College, Calcutta University, 2006-2009).
  • Dr. Aoun is a trained electrophysiologist cum cell biologist. He is the first person in the field to discover the “pathophysiological role of TMEM16F or ANO6 (Cl- channel) in intestinal ion transport and physiological role of TMEM16A or ANO1( Cl- channel) in smooth muscle E-C coupling. He also worked on developing universal anti-diarrheal therapy.
  • He has a long-term interest in lipid regulation of membrane transport and trafficking. Now it's been evident that membrane contact sites like ER-PM or ER-Mitocondria contact sites are the hub of cellular signaling events(e.g, Ca2+ and cAMP signaling). These signaling nanodomains are highly dynamic architectures that modulate the channels and transporters' function during physiological and pathophysiological conditions.
  • Current research interest is the role of membrane lipids and lipid transporters in the orchestration of cAMP and Ca2+ signaling, regulation of membrane transport and trafficking.
