My research centers on athletes identifying novel molecular targets and mechanisms that regulate metabolic rate, oxygen consumption, and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and adipose tissue under normal physiological conditions and during exercise. A central focus is Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ Coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism that links exercise-induced signals to metabolic reprogramming. PGC-1α increases the burning of fatty acids, oxidative phosphorylation, the uptake of glucose through GLUT4, the growth of new blood vessels, the change of muscle fibers from fast-twitch to slow-twitch fibers, and the production of heat through UCP1 induction in brown fat. It also encourages the browning of white fat through irisin. Its activity is regulated by AMPK, p38 MAPK, SIRT1, and CaMK pathways, whereas GSK3β and Akt act as inhibitors. Since reduced PGC-1α expression is associated with obesity, diabetes, aging, and metabolic syndrome, understanding its role may provide new therapeutic strategies for improving exercise performance, metabolic health, and preventing cardiometabolic diseases in athletes.

My research focuses on athletes and aims to identify novel molecular targets and underlying mechanisms that regulate metabolic rate, oxygen consumption, and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and adipose tissue under normal physiological conditions as well as during exercise. A key focus is Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ Coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism that connects exercise-induced signals with metabolic reprogramming. PGC-1α enhances fatty acid oxidation, oxidative phosphorylation, GLUT4-mediated glucose uptake, angiogenesis, the transition of muscle fibers from fast-twitch glycolytic to slow-twitch oxidative types, and thermogenesis through UCP1 induction in brown adipose tissue. It also promotes the browning of white adipose tissue via irisin secretion. Its activity is positively regulated by AMPK, p38 MAPK, SIRT1, and CaMK signaling pathways, while GSK3β and Akt act as negative regulators. Since reduced PGC-1α expression is strongly associated with obesity, diabetes, aging, and metabolic syndrome, understanding its role may help develop innovative therapeutic strategies to enhance athletic performance, improve metabolic health, and prevent cardiometabolic disorders in athletes.
